Unexpected Pizza Toppings That Actually Work (And Some That Don’t!)

Unexpected Pizza Toppings That Actually Work (And Some That Don’t!)

I love experimenting with pizza, and over the years, I’ve tried some wild toppings—some were shockingly good, while others… well, let’s just say you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did. But who knows? You may want to give some of these a try! 🍕🔥

Surprisingly Delicious Pizza Toppings

1. Hot Honey 🍯🌶️

🔥 Verdict: GAME-CHANGER Sweet, spicy, and sticky—drizzling hot honey over a fresh, cheesy pizza is next-level. It balances salty and savory flavors beautifully. Best on: Pepperoni, sausage, or even a simple Margherita.

2. Fig & Prosciutto 🍇🥓

🔥 Verdict: Fancy but worth it Sweet, caramelized figs and salty, crispy prosciutto create a gourmet experience. Add a little goat cheese, and you’ve got a masterpiece. Best on: Thin-crust, white pizzas.

3. Pickles 🥒

🔥 Verdict: Surprisingly good At first, I thought, this is a terrible idea, but tangy pickles with garlic butter and cheese is like a pizza-fied Cuban sandwich. If you love pickles, give it a shot. Best on: White garlic sauce base with bacon.

4. Mashed Potatoes 🥔

🔥 Verdict: Unexpectedly delicious A layer of creamy mashed potatoes instead of tomato sauce? It works. Especially with bacon and cheddar, turning your pizza into a loaded baked potato on a crust. Best on: Deep-dish or pan pizza.

5. BBQ Chips or Doritos 🥔🔥

🔥 Verdict: Crunchy and addictive Crushed BBQ chips or Nacho Cheese Doritos add a crispy, salty kick on top of melty cheese. Don’t knock it till you try it! Best on: BBQ chicken pizza or taco pizza.

Toppings That Just Didn’t Work (But Maybe You’re Brave Enough to Try)

1. Watermelon 🍉

Verdict: Nope. Just nope. I thought the juiciness might work like pineapple, but the water content made everything soggy. It’s a no-go for me. (Try grilling watermelon separately and eating it on the side instead.)

2. Gummy Bears 🧸

Verdict: A melted horror show I was hoping for a sweet-salty contrast, but the gummies melted into a weird, sticky mess that no one wanted to eat. (Maybe if they were added AFTER baking?)

3. Tuna 🐟

Verdict: Way too fishy I’ve had good seafood pizzas before, but canned tuna on pizza was too overpowering and dried out in the oven. Maybe it could work with a creamy white sauce? (I won’t be trying it again.)

4. Chocolate Sauce 🍫

Verdict: I wanted to love it… but didn’t I had high hopes for a sweet-savory balance, but something about chocolate and melted cheese just didn’t click. Maybe it works better on dessert pizzas with mascarpone instead of mozzarella.

5. Wasabi 🌿🔥

Verdict: My sinuses are still recovering I thought a spicy wasabi drizzle might give a unique heat, but instead, it overwhelmed everything and made each bite way too intense. If you’re a wasabi addict, you might love it—but be warned!

Final Thoughts: Would You Try These?

Some of these toppings blew me away, while others… well, I took one for the team. But pizza is all about creativity, and you never know what might become your next favorite topping! 🍕🔥
